Alexis Mac Allister has delivered a brutally honest assessment of Liverpool’s title defence, admitting the reigning champions have little chance of retaining the Premier League crown.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Fulham, the Argentine midfielder conceded the gap to the league’s leading sides is now too large to ignore.
“It is quite clear” – title defence slipping away
Liverpool head into Sunday’s match sitting fourth in the table, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal, and adrift of both Aston Villa and Manchester City.
Mac Allister did not shy away from that reality.
“There are not many chances of Liverpool retaining the title,” he told Sky Sports. “I hate to say it, but it is quite clear. Arsenal are in a really good moment, City are close, but we are not close in terms of performances or results.”
The midfielder admitted the situation is painful given the expectations surrounding the defending champions.
“It hurts because this should be a moment where we are enjoying the Premier League we won. Many things have changed from last season and it is not ideal.”
Change and transition taking its toll
When asked to explain Liverpool’s struggles, Mac Allister hinted at disruption behind the scenes.
“Many things changed,” he said. “New players came in to replace those who left, and we changed too many things, but I prefer to keep it to myself.”
Liverpool broke the British transfer record last summer to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, but injuries have undermined the rebuild.
Isak is now expected to miss several months after suffering a broken leg, a setback Mac Allister described as cruel.
“He is a really good guy and was really unlucky with the injury after the goal he scored,” he said. “But we are sure he will be back at his best.”
Focus shifts to remaining trophies
Despite ruling out a title defence, Mac Allister insists Liverpool still have meaningful objectives to pursue.
The Reds face Arsenal on Thursday before beginning their FA Cup campaign against Barnsley, while also competing in the Champions League against Marseille and Qarabag.
“The Champions League is there and we will definitely fight for that,” he said. “The FA Cup is also a really important competition. When you play for Liverpool, you always have to fight for everything.”

What this means for Liverpool
Mac Allister’s honesty reflects a squad recalibrating expectations rather than abandoning ambition. While the Premier League crown appears out of reach, Liverpool’s season remains alive on multiple fronts — and how they respond to this reality may define their next cycle under pressure.
