Former Cameroon international Alex Song has hailed Carlos Baleba after the Brighton midfielder’s standout performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, suggesting his advice played a role in the youngster reaching a new level.
Baleba is currently away with Cameroon at AFCON and has been instrumental in the Indomitable Lions’ run to the quarter-finals, most recently impressing in a 2-1 victory over South Africa.
Song praises Baleba’s “high-level football”
Speaking after the win, comments relayed by Le Bled Parle, Song praised the 22-year-old’s influence in midfield — while also hinting that a prior conversation helped unlock his performance.
“I think my words paid off, because Carlos Baleba’s game was really excellent,” Song said.
“When you see Baleba on the pitch, it’s very high-level football.
“He is a player we hope to see like this every day and in every game. When you have a player with enormous potential like Baleba, you are happy.”
The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder described Baleba as a key asset for Cameroon, stressing the importance of encouraging him to play with freedom and confidence.
“He delivered a truly great performance and raised his level,” Song added.
“I think Cameroon possesses a very, very talented player. When he plays at this level, Cameroon gets results.”
Worked to the point of cramp
Song also highlighted Baleba’s work rate, noting that the Brighton midfielder gave everything physically during the match.
“The whole team worked hard, ran and gave their all,” he said. “We even saw Baleba finish with cramps because he gave so much. That shows the energy and commitment he put into the game.”
Baleba’s display underlined his growing importance to the national side ahead of a major test against Morocco, with Cameroon set to face the host nation later this week.
Brighton watching closely
While Cameroon continue their AFCON campaign, Brighton & Hove Albion will be keen to have Baleba back as soon as possible as the Premier League season enters its decisive phase.
Since arriving on the south coast in 2023, Baleba has steadily developed into a key figure for Brighton, with his performances also attracting interest from clubs such as Manchester United.
His form at AFCON only strengthens the sense that Brighton are nurturing another elite-level midfielder — one now delivering on the international stage.
