Alan Shearer has taken aim at Anthony Gordon after Newcastle United’s 3–1 defeat to West Ham, highlighting a worrying trend in the winger’s Premier League form that reflects the club’s ongoing away-day struggles.

After three straight wins at St James’ Park, Eddie Howe’s side were humbled in London — and Shearer, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, didn’t hold back in his criticism of Gordon and his teammates.

Alan Shearer demands more from Anthony Gordon

The defeat to West Ham saw Howe make three changes at half-time, including substituting Gordon after another ineffective performance. Despite excelling in Europe, the 23-year-old has yet to replicate that form domestically.

So far this season, Gordon has registered four goals and one assist, but all of them have come in the Champions League — not a single contribution in the Premier League.

That statistic becomes even more concerning when looking at the bigger picture: Gordon has now gone 19 Premier League games without scoring or assisting, with his last goal contribution coming against Southampton on January 25.

Shearer was blunt about what needs to change:

“They’ve got to get players into goal-scoring positions, because there’s only four of them who’ve scored league goals at this moment in time. Anthony Gordon’s been really good in the Champions League, hasn’t done it in the league yet.” — Alan Shearer, The Rest Is Football podcast

Gordon’s form paints a clear picture: productive in Europe, ineffective in England. His Champions League spark hasn’t translated into Premier League impact, leaving Newcastle overly reliant on others for goals. Unless he starts contributing domestically, Eddie Howe’s front line will continue to lack balance.

Shearer blasts Newcastle’s away form

It isn’t just Gordon under scrutiny — Newcastle’s entire away record has become a concern. The Magpies have not won away from home in the Premier League all season, with their last road victory coming against Leicester City in April.

Shearer said the problem runs deeper than tactics or selection:

“I don’t like what I’m seeing away from home. That doesn’t stop you running around, that doesn’t stop you being aggressive. They’ve got to get back to being tough to play against — particularly away from home.” — Alan Shearer

He added that Howe’s frustration was clear after the game, and hinted that some players are failing to meet the physical and mental standards set during last season’s Champions League run.

Our View: Gordon must step up — and soon

In our view, Shearer’s criticism feels justified. Anthony Gordon’s energy and work rate are unquestionable, but output matters — especially for a forward in a struggling side. If Newcastle are to rediscover consistency, Gordon needs to start producing in the Premier League the way he has in Europe.

Otherwise, he risks being remembered this season for effort without end product — and Howe’s patience will only stretch so far.

What’s Next

Newcastle’s next test comes in Europe before they travel to Brentford on Sunday in the Premier League — another opportunity for Gordon to end his barren run in domestic competition. A goal at the Gtech Community Stadium would do more than silence critics; it could spark the confidence needed to turn his season around.

As for Shearer, his message was loud and clear — this Newcastle side must rediscover their ruthless edge away from home if they’re serious about challenging for Europe again.

👉 Newcastle fans — do you agree with Shearer’s verdict? Is Anthony Gordon’s Premier League drought a worry, or just a matter of time before he clicks?
