Ajax interim head coach Fred Grim has publicly confirmed the club’s interest in signing Oleksandr Zinchenko, expressing hope that a January move can be finalised in the coming days.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Grim acknowledged Ajax’s intent to strengthen before the transfer window closes, with Zinchenko emerging as a priority target as the Eredivisie side look to add experience and versatility to their squad.

Deal complications slow progress

Reports over the weekend in the Netherlands suggested Ajax had reached an agreement with Arsenal over a loan move until the end of the season. However, the situation has since become more complex.

Zinchenko has been on loan at Nottingham Forest since last summer, and Ajax were initially waiting for that spell to be cut short. Arsenal have since altered their stance, pushing for a permanent transfer rather than a temporary deal.

The shift is driven by contract timing. Zinchenko has less than six months remaining on his deal at the Emirates, prompting Arsenal to seek a fee rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer.

Direct talks underway

According to De Telegraaf, negotiations over a transfer fee have been ongoing, although progress has stalled in recent days. Journalist Mike Verweij reported on Friday that Ajax had yet to make a breakthrough, leading to more direct involvement at senior level.

Ajax director of football Jordi Cruyff is now said to be in direct discussions with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as the Dutch club attempt to unblock the deal.

Grim admitted Ajax’s position in the market limits early-window movement but believes there is still time.

“I hope it will take shape soon,” Grim said. “We are very busy strengthening the squad. We’re not in a position to make a big impact at the beginning of January — you’re dependent on players’ choices. It has to be finalised in the coming week.”

Waiting on Forest exit

For any move to progress, Arsenal must first terminate Zinchenko’s loan spell at the City Ground — something that has yet to happen. With Ajax now openly confirming their interest, movement is expected as all parties seek clarity before deadline day.

Zinchenko’s ability to operate in defence or midfield makes him an attractive short-term solution for Ajax, while Arsenal face a decision on whether to cash in now or risk losing the player later without compensation.
