Axel Disasi’s late move to West Ham has sparked lingering regret in Italy, with fresh claims suggesting the Chelsea defender would have been a “perfect” fit for AC Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri.
The French centre-back joined West Ham on loan in the closing hours of the January transfer window, finally securing a chance to play after failing to feature at all this season. But according to well-connected voices in Italy, Milan’s failure to land Disasi is now being viewed as a missed opportunity and not for the reasons initially suggested.
Milan regret missing out on Disasi
Before his switch to West Ham, Axel Disasi had emerged as a concrete option for several Serie A sides. Fiorentina had already held advanced discussions, while AC Milan entered the picture late, with sporting director Igli Tare waiting on final approval from Chelsea to push the deal through.
Despite that interest, Disasi ultimately remained in England — a decision that has prompted questions in Milan about whether an ideal solution slipped away.
Those doubts were addressed directly by journalist Carlo Pellegatti, who rejected claims that Allegri himself was opposed to the signing.
“It was perfect for Allegri”
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Pellegatti was unequivocal when discussing Disasi’s profile and Allegri’s stance.
“First of all, let’s be very clear,” Pellegatti said, as relayed by MilanNews. “I read today that Disasi probably won’t come because Allegri doesn’t like him. I’m telling you out loud — it’s not true.”
He went further, stressing that Allegri had actively approved the defender.
“If Disasi had arrived, it would have been perfect for Allegri; he was one of the players Allegri had said OK to. Of course, depending on the market, costs and opportunities, Tare would have developed things, but for Allegri it was perfect.”
Pellegatti underlined the strength of his information, adding: “I have very direct sources on this matter. If I tell you it was perfect for Allegri, it was perfect.”
Why the deal collapsed
According to multiple reports, the failure to complete the move had little to do with Allegri’s preferences. Instead, practical considerations proved decisive.
Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio had previously reported that Disasi was keen to remain in London, a factor that complicated any late switch to Italy. That preference, combined with timing and cost, ultimately cleared the path for West Ham to step in.
The Hammers moved quickly, securing the defender on loan from Chelsea to bolster their options for the second half of the season.
West Ham opportunity, Milan consequences
Disasi’s arrival at West Ham gives him a clear platform to restart his campaign, having already experienced English football during a previous loan spell at Aston Villa. For Milan, however, the absence of a January centre-back signing has sharpened the sense of regret — particularly given Allegri’s reported approval.
Whether that frustration lingers into the summer remains to be seen. For now, Disasi will look to make his mark in claret and blue, while Milan are left reflecting on a deal that might have been.
