AC Milan are preparing to open talks for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez as soon as the January transfer window opens, determined not to repeat the frustrations of their failed summer pursuit.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Milan made significant progress toward signing the England international in August but were blocked late in the window when Liverpool could not secure Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace as a replacement. The setback halted negotiations, but Milan’s interest has not cooled.

The Italian outlet reports that Milan’s sporting director Igli Tare is now ready to launch what is described as “an attack” for Gomez in early January, ensuring the deal doesn’t drag toward deadline day again.

Milan want swift progress this time

Milan’s intention is clear: start talks with Gomez’s representatives immediately once the window opens. Discussions with the player’s camp reportedly went “very well” in the summer, with personal terms not viewed as an obstacle.

What remains uncertain is how much Milan are willing to offer Liverpool. The 28-year-old still has a contract at Anfield until 2027, but his limited minutes under Arne Slot have made him a realistic candidate for a winter departure.

So far this season, Gomez has played fewer than 50 Premier League minutes, appeared briefly in the Champions League, and featured in two EFL Cup matches.

The report notes that Milan view Gomez’s versatility — covering both centre-back and full-back roles — as ideal for bolstering their defensive depth ahead of the Serie A title push and Champions League knockout rounds.

Why Milan’s renewed approach makes sense

In our view, this proactive stance reflects a lesson learned from the summer. Milan’s defence, though solid, has suffered from depth concerns following injuries to key players. Gomez’s combination of experience, pace, and tactical flexibility suits the Rossoneri’s system under Massimiliano Allegri, particularly as they look to rotate more heavily in the second half of the campaign.

Liverpool, meanwhile, may be open to discussions depending on their own defensive reinforcements in January. Gomez’s lack of game time under Slot has raised questions about his long-term role at Anfield, and a well-structured offer could tempt the club to cash in while maintaining squad balance.

What’s Next
